FAQ
Questions and Answers
Are your massage therapists licensed and certified?
Yes. All of our massage therapists are certified by the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork (NCBTMB) and licensed by the State of New Jersey. We are also members of Associated Bodywork and Massage Professionals (ABMP) and the American Massage Therapy Association (AMTA).
What should I expect during my appointment?
Your massage therapist should require you to fill out a health history form. They may also ask more in-depth questions to establish which areas you would like to focus on, or if there are any specific conditions needing to be addressed. It is important to list all health concerns and medication so that your therapist can adapt your session to your specific needs without causing any harm. It is also important to specify any allergies so that your therapist may adjust the oil or cream being used during your visit.
Should I take off my underwear when I get a massage?
You may undress to your level of comfort. Many people prefer to keep their underwear on during a massage, while others choose to be nude. Your massage therapist will leave the room so you can undress and lie on the massage table under a top sheet. Regardless if you choose to maintain some clothing or not, your massage therapist will always ensure that you are always properly covered.
The pressure isn't deep enough, but I don't want to complain. What should I do?
You are encouraged to openly communicate with the massage therapist about your preferences and comfort. If anything needs to be adjusted, or if we are almost (but not quite) getting the right spot, just speak up and let us know right away! Often, too much pressure can cause muscles to tighten further, and detract from the effectiveness of your treatment.
Is it okay to talk to the massage therapist during my massage?
You will experience the greatest benefits from your session if you just allow yourself to become quiet and relaxed…which helps your massage therapist focus on providing a great massage!
Definitely communicate with your therapist if you feel any pain or discomfort, if you have any concerns during your massage, or if there is anything your massage therapist can do to make you more comfortable. Some types of massage that work on deep layers of muscle and tissue, such as deep tissue or sports massage, will require more feedback to ensure that the pressure is not uncomfortable.I woke up with a cold today. Should I come in?
A massage will likely just make you feel worse. If you are sick, you may get your therapist sick and pass it on to other clients that day. Even if you are giving less than a 24-hour notice, we prefer you reschedule your appointment if you are feeling unwell, so let us know as soon as possible.
When is it not okay to get a massage?
In general, there are a few conditions that would prevent you from getting a massage. Of course, do not schedule an appointment if you are feeling unwell, have a fever, cold, or a skin condition that is contagious. The first trimester of pregnancy is generally considered off-limits for massage, as are active chemotherapy or other intensive medical treatments. If you have a serious medical condition and you are unsure if a massage would be safe for you, massage therapists will recommend that you speak with your primary care provider to get approval first.
What if I have body acne, or skin conditions, or forgot to shave?
Rest assured, massage therapists have seen and felt it all! Please do not feel uncomfortable or embarrassed. Your massage therapist is focused on creating a relaxing and therapeutic experience for you, and you cannot relax if you are anxious about your body’s appearance. If anything, your therapist may be able to make product or technique recommendations to help alleviate any conditions that may be bothersome to you.
How often should I get a massage?
Individual preference varies, so for most, it depends on your pain, physical needs, emotional needs, and of course, budget. Receiving a massage regularly has the most benefit; this can be as often as weekly or monthly.
